WAD Manager and CIOS

To those who get an error number while installing WADs:

A lot of people come on asking how to fix an error in WAD Manager. The simple way of putting this is, if you get an error, there is a 99.9% chance you don't have a CIOS, or "Custom IOS" for those of you unfamiliar with the term, installed. If this is the case, you must follow some tutorials or figure out how to install the latest cios (CIOS38 rev14 is the newest, available on wani's blog: wii.waninkoko.info.) Tutorials can be found on this website, or our wiki (wehackwii.pbworks.com) as well as Slingblade's wii hacking website (wiihomebrew1170.webs.com.)

If, however, you DO have a CIOS installed, then there are three possibilities. First is that you have an old version of wad manager, and should update (wad manager 1.5 is the latest.) If you already have the newest version of wad manager and a CIOS, then it's likely that you have a corrupted wad file, and should find a new copy of it from another location than where you originally downloaded it. The last possibility is because of error ret=-1022, see below for more information.

If you still have problems, feel free to ask! Also keep in mind that it is very difficult to answer questions without much info. If you do need to post a question for help in the shoutbox, be sure to give as much detail as possible, including error numbers, and versions of things you have installed including the system menu number, you version of wad manager, your version of CIOS, as well as anything you might think will help. It is not often that people get responses immediately due to the lack of people interested in answering while in the shoutbox, so giving more information to begin with helps ease the trouble of needing to ask later, and requiring more time to get a helpful response from anyone who can help.

Available here you can see a list of known wii error messages (thx nvic) and I'll take a minute to explain further.
The main error that about 99% of the people here bring up is error ret=-2011 for wad manager. As you can see from the chart, ret=-2011 appears to be caused by a lack of a trucha bug. Basically what this means is, Wad Manager cannot find an IOS on your wii that still has the trucha bug because Nintendo patched all of the IOSs to fix that, but this is where the CIOS comes into play. Installing the CIOS not only gives extra functionality, but one of its sole purposes is to provide an IOS WITH the trucha bug still in place, thus also solving that problem. Therefore, 99% of the people here who have these errors can see that installing the CIOS will fix their problem. Furthermore, error ret=-4100 appears to be the error code for a bad wad, and on occasion some people get error ret=-1, which is caused by a missing WAD file. If this is the case, double check the necessary directory and make sure the WAD file exists where it should, and is named properly. Honestly, I have never seen anyone who had an error besides these three, mostly because the other errors don't really apply to most people. Point being, make sure you have a CIOS installed! Even if it's not wani's official CIOS installed to IOS249, it is still possible to CHOOSE the IOS to use during installation via Wad Manager.

It has come to my attention that another rather common error (ret=-1022) has not been epxlained, nor is contained in the previously linked spreadsheet. After some research, it seems that -1022 refers to wad manager detecting the channel data while attempting to install the channel. If this is the case, please try to use Wad Manager to first UNinstall the wad via the uninstallation option. If you get an error -4353, it is OK! It simply means the ticket was not found (most likely deleted by the system menu in data management.) After uninstalling, attempt to reinstall and this SHOULd work.

Common Errors:

ret=-1
Problem: WAD not found
Solution: Make sure you have the wad in the correct folder, with the correct name

ret=-1022
Problem: Channel data already detected
Solution: Use Wad Manager and the WAD on your SD card to first uninstall the WAD, then attempt to reinstall the WAD.

ret=-2011
Problem: Missing trucha bug
Solution: Obtain and install the latest CIOS

Hm, surprised you didn't mention the particular error #s. -2011 and -1017 are most common.

I found this link to a list of error codes on GBATemp. Not all are WAD related, but there are quite a few on there for wads:

Well tbh i didnt know the errors offhand but i knew there were two (-1 and -2011 i recognize from the chart) which are the only ones people ever bring up, and i think once or twice ever ive seen the error for a bad wad. In the end though i thought i would just save everyone a whole lot of time asking but letting them know that theyre error is MOST LIKELY caused by the lack of a cios, which as i can see, -1 refers to missing ios and -2011 is no trucha bug, also solved by missing cios on newer system menus.

Read the chart wrong for -1, updated and fixed that :P

there's another error that pops up sometimes when whatever you're installing (or just c/IOS maybe?) is <= the current version. In that case, I uninstall using the same wad I'm trying to install, then install immediately after the uninstall finishes.

There's one that means there's not enough space, you should put that.
