Waninkoko Releases "Firmware Updater v4.2"

Waninkoko, who recently said he was saying "Goodbye Wii", has released "Firmware Updater v4.2 to update your Wii's System Menu to v4.2 safely."

Recommended updating steps (it's how I updated)...

Prerequisites: You must have IOS30 v1040. If you don't, use Dop-IOS to downgrade it, before proceeding.
  1. Download and install the HackMii Installer v0.5 (you will need to do this even if you already have an older version installed).
  2. Download and run Waninkoko's Firmware Updater v4.2.
  3. Download and run Dop-IOS.
  4. Using Dop-IOS, downgrade IOS30 to v1040 (fixes "no vulnerable IOS's found" error, if you need to run the HackMii Installer again).
  5. Using Dop-IOS, reinstall the latest IOS61 without the sig-hash fix (fixes the upside-down Homebrew Channel).
  6. WIN!

Has anyone tried this?

Hi guys... I have a Wii @ version 3.2 (does not support SD data card, correct?). How can I install this firmware?

Alex said...

ah crap, so that's why the homebrew channel was upside down, thanks! everything else works, just the stupid upside down homebrew channel

NighthAwk said...

I dont understand this insistant rush to download system menu 4.2. IT DOESNT DO ANYTHING! There are no additional features besides making homebrew harder... Why not just stick to 4.1? Moving for 4.2 is nothing more than a purely idiotic move.

Manuel said...

So the 4.2 Sys Menu is just a security patch of sorts against homebrew? Lame. Even 4.1 had some slight improvements. Might as well skip it for now.

TiMeBoMb said...

@NighthAwk... I don't understand why you always have to complain...and why is it so idiotic? Several people have asked how to do this, so I've posted it. Plain and simple. If you don't want v4.2, then don't install it! >=|

TiMeBoMb said...

@Manuel... Yes; it is a homebrew-blocker update. Nintendo said some BS about performance updates, but I haven't seen any.

TiMeBoMb said...

@GD... The link below will get you to System Menu v4.0. Then, use Waninkoko's Firmware Updaters v4.1 & v4.2, to get you the rest of the way.

Do you need to reapply, cIOS38 Rev 14, Hermes 222/223, etc after the update? Also what cIOS is it that enables pirated WiiWare games to run? Is it one blocked by the new homebrew channel, or not blocked but made a pain in the ace.

hey guys , i upgrade my wii from 3.3 to 4.2, i alrady installed the bannerbomb v2 with hombrechannel hm, and dvdx , so my question is, how can i downgrade mi wii version to 3.3 or 4.0 or 4.1?

luís said...

hey timebomb relax dont give a damn about these guys. thanks for the post!
does it work with any wii? even lu64's like mine?

Matt said...

Doesn't 4.2 include a new version of the Shop Channel? That's a reason to upgrade. This guide at least shows hot to install the new HBC if you have patched IOS30.

Matt said...

Ok, so it worked but not as this guide says. So I run Firmware Updater and it works with no errors, but my Homebrew Channel is completely gone! So I use the newest Bannerbomb and that works, but I can't install Homebrew Channel because my IOS30 is patched. So without HBC to use Dop-IOS I had to take the app's .dol file and put it to the root of the SD and use Bannerbomb to run it and downgrade IOS30, then delete the boot.dol and put the Hackmii installer .elf into the SD's root and install was as described from that point.

NighthAwk said...

TiMeBoMb, i have nothing against you posting it, im not trying to insult you, i just dont understand the train of thought for installing something meaningless that does nothing more than make it HARDER for you to do homebrew is all. And Matt, you dont need the new system menu for the updated shop channel, u can update it separately like always. The shop channel is nothing more than an application and is not part of the system menu. Thus in the end, there is no GOOD reason to update, and will only cause problems for people, and in return generate a million new questions asking why something won't work.

Alex said...

If you do all of this and your Homebrew Channel is STILL upside down,

Redo the sig hash for IOS 61, and then reinstall HBC and it should work, you don't have to redo the sig hash if you don't want it'll work either way

Matt said...

@ NighthAwk:

I know, I was just pointing out that it was part of the update although you could update it separately. The only thing that doesn't work is Preloader, so I don't really see how it's going to cause a bunch of questions. You are on the shoutbox and comment sections 24/7, it seems you like answering questions so it's odd that you would complain :-P

NighthAwk said...

i just like to check on things and when i can i dont mind answering questions, but i do hate when people keep asking the same questions over and over, typically easy to find answers too. 4.2 adds nothing but a hastle to make sure homebrew keeps working and theres no doubt in my mind someone will do something wrong and will have problems a lot.

I updated to 4.2 last night and I just now found out that my hacked Wii wads aren't working anymore! >=( if any1 has an answer to this, plz help.

Bannerbomb for 4.2 has been out for a couple of days!

"Matt said...
Ok, so it worked but not as this guide says...my Homebrew Channel is completely gone!..."

@Matt... If your Homebrew Channel is "completely gone", that means you did NOT follow Step #1! Step #1 has you install the newest version of the HackMii Installer (v0.5)!

Matt said...

@TiMeBoMb

I couldn't follow step one without using Dop-IOS to revert to an unpatched IOS30. I figured this step was just for people who didn't already have HBC, I didn't exactly foresee Waninkoko's updater deleting it, but I figured it out anyways so that's all that matters.

I have been using 3.2U for a long time now and thinking of upgrading. I have a chip modded wii. Do I need to upgrade to 4.0 before going to 4.2? Can I use Waninkoko's v4.0 firmware upgrade? If I go to 4.0, do I need to go to 4.1 before 4.2? Is it worth upgrading from 3.2 (everything seems to work fine.) Will any of this effect my USB Loader?

NighthAwk said...

You do NOT need to upgrade multiple times, 3.2->4,2 works in one step, but i highly recommend using system menu 4.1. It gives the bug fixes with wiimotion plus, and has the sd card menu loading support. System menu 4.2 only breaks a lot of homebrew and makes it harder to use (but it still works). Just use wani's 4.1 updater. Also if ur not interested in sd menu loading then theres really no reason to use above menu 3.2.

TiMeBoMb said...

@Matt... You don't have to have an unmodified version of IOS30, but you will need version 1040. I've updated my post, to include "Prerequisites" and a note on Step #1.

Russel said...

everything works after doing this except for Usbloader GX (which works sporadically).

is this just me or is something up?

Russel said...

to clarify: Usbloader GX will always boot up but now games on my HDD that have always worked will sometimes not load (screen goes black and wiimote turns off once you select to play them)

TiMeBoMb said...

@Russel... Be sure you have the latest release of USBLoader GX. The built-in update feature is always a version, or two, behind the actual release. Mine seems to be working as it should.

Russel said...

when I first noticed the problem I deleted it all together and downloaded the "easy installer from:
http://sites.google.com/site/usbloadergui/downloads

is that the correct place/version?
and the internal update says it's up to date

now it seems 1-2 games work every time and everything else just... doesn't.

TiMeBoMb said...

@Russel...
It looks like revision 778 is the newest source:
http://code.google.com/p/usbloader-gui/source/list

You normally can find the latest builds here:
http://sites.google.com/site/usbloadergui/downloads/revisions

Russel said...

now with the newest revision NONE work :(... will have to try again tomorrow... busy day ahead.

NighthAwk said...

heh TiMeBoMb, not to really push this fact but i told u there would be unforeseen problems with such a pointless update ;). My best guess is to try and reinstall some IOSs, the updater may have installed/overwritten one with code making it no longer work...

zeldas121314 said...

I cant run the firmware updater v4.2 because my wiis not connected to the internet, so i cant install it, and i cant get the internet because the wii settings wont even load, it just freezes...so im screwed

Fractle said...

ok, so I tried to run the updater but I ran into two problems along the way. First off, I could never get the Dop-IOS to run. the wii said that the boot.dol file was unreadable. I tried to update to 4.0 but now I can't get any boot.dol's to run. Is there a way to start from scratch or at least from an earlier position? I feel like I've messed things up a little too much...

NighthAwk said...

zeldas121314, it sounds like u have a semibrick, do some googling it should be fairly easy to fix.

Andrew said...

Worked awesome! I was still on 3.4, and was afraid to update. Decided to take a risk and tried your guide. Wii is now successfully on 4.2 and all my Softmods are still in tact and working! :]

Thanks alot bro. :]

Just a question regarding the new update? I got it installed and working without any issues but wanted to know will this block wii system updates from disc? I have toy story mania retail and it wants to update the system so just wanted to know if I could do this without a problem or should I just use neo gamma to lauch the game for now?

Derrick said...

Hi guys,

I have updated my wii to v4.2J via Internet and now cannot load all the downloaded game. Can I follow the step to restore my wii ?

David Omar said...

hi guys, well my wii is not reading disc even the original ones ... how can i fix it? it's there a way to downgrade 4.2 to 4.1 3.3 ??

NighthAwk said...

David Omar, i hate to say this but if ur wii fails to read ANY discs at all, theres a 99.99% chance its not homebrew or system menu related, and it is probable that the disc drive or the disc drive's laser is dead. If you have homebrew u wont be able to get it fixed by nintendo, i suggets investing in a small (80GB maybe) external usb hard drive and using a usb loader.

Julian said...

Wow, am I the only one who couldn't figure out to rename the firmware updater to boot.dol?

I know everyone will think I'm stupid but that took forever to figure out.

Only just getting round to this, noticed the download link to hackmii is now at version 0.6, assume this is ok.
